Research-based score out of 10. The overall score is the average of the four parts below.
- Shuts off the whole house automatically
- Claims to detect leaks as small as a drop a minute
- Keeps protecting if Wi-Fi drops
- Some insurers offer discounts
- Needs a plumber to cut into the main line
- 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
- Battery backup is a $343 extra for 4 hours
- Warranty length stated three ways
The short answer
Consider it if
- You own your home and a burst pipe while you travel is your worst-case scenario.
- Your main line has an outlet within 10 feet and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi reaches it.
- Your insurer gives a discount for an automatic shutoff valve.
Skip it if
- You rent, or your main shutoff is outdoors or in a spot with no power.
- You only want to know about a leak under one sink. A $20 puck sensor does that.
- You expect it to work through a long power cut without buying the battery kit.
What a working install really costs
Moen's page listed the shutoff at $623.99 when we read it, and showed that size as sold out. The product feed Moen gives its partners listed versions sold through insurers from $445 to $549, so the price depends on where and how you buy.
| Item | Price on Moen's page |
|---|---|
| Flo Smart Water Monitor and Shutoff | $623.99 |
| Flo Battery Kit (4 hours of backup) | $343.20 |
| Smart Leak Detector, 3-pack | $153.68 |
| 25 ft power extension cable | $16.37 |
| Professional installation | Not priced. Moen recommends it. |
The shutoff plus battery kit comes to $967 before a plumber touches a pipe. Installation means cutting a section out of your main cold-water line, which Moen's own FAQ calls an advanced project. Get a plumber's quote before you order.
Three things your house must have
The right pipe size. There are three models for pipes up to 3/4 in, 1 in and 1 1/4 in. One line on the page says the largest fits "1-1/2 inch or smaller" pipe, which contradicts the rest. Measure your pipe and confirm the model number with Moen.
Power. The device needs an AC outlet within 10 feet. In a power cut it stops protecting unless you bought the battery kit, and that kit lasts up to four hours.
2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It does not join 5 GHz networks. If the connection drops, Moen says the valve keeps working from what it has already learned about your usage, which is the right design.
The warranty is stated three ways
Different spec entries on the same page list a 1-year limited warranty, a 5-year extended limited warranty and a "Limited Continuous Device Warranty". The longer cover appears to be tied to the FloProtect plan, which bundles a three-year plan and up to $5,000 toward an insurance deductible. The page did not show a standalone price for that plan.

Only with the optional battery kit, which Moen says gives up to four hours.
Did you test it?
No. This review is based on Moen's published listing.
Verdict
An automatic whole-house shutoff is one of the few smart home devices that can pay for itself in a single bad afternoon. Flo's listing makes a good case for the idea and a muddled one for the details. Price the plumber, check your pipe size, Wi-Fi band and outlet, and get the warranty confirmed before you buy.
