ProtoArc EK01 Plus review: "200 days" is standby, and it is nearly 20 inches wide

An $80 split ergonomic keyboard with a built-in wrist rest and backlight. Two numbers on the listing need a closer look before you clear desk space.

Pros
  • Split, curved layout with cushioned wrist rest
  • Two Bluetooth channels plus a USB receiver
  • Backlit keys
  • 2-year warranty and 30-day returns
Cons
  • Battery life given only as standby time
  • 19.7 in wide
  • Key travel and weight not published
  • Fixed split, cannot be separated

The short answer

Consider it if

  • Your wrists ache on a flat keyboard and you want to try a split layout without spending $150 or more.
  • You switch between a work laptop and a personal one.
  • You have a wide desk or keyboard tray.

Skip it if

  • You want a keyboard whose halves separate and angle freely. This one is a single piece.
  • You prefer mechanical switches.
  • Your keyboard tray is narrower than 20 inches.

What "200 days" means

The listing says the 2,000 mAh battery lasts "up to 200 days" on a charge. Read the wording: that is standby life, the time the keyboard can sit switched on and idle. ProtoArc does not publish hours of typing, with or without the backlight.

Backlights are the main drain on any wireless keyboard. A fair expectation is weeks between charges with the light off and days with it on at full brightness. That is our reading of how such keyboards behave in general. It is a guess about this one, and ProtoArc could settle it by publishing a typing-hours figure. Charging takes 2 to 3 hours over USB-C.

Check your desk

The EK01 Plus measures 500 mm by 265 mm, which is 19.7 in wide and 10.4 in deep including the wrist rest. A typical full-size keyboard is about 17 in wide and 5 to 6 in deep. This one takes almost twice the desk area.

Width matters for your mouse arm too. The further right the mouse sits, the more your shoulder rotates outward. If you rarely use the number pad, a narrower split board may suit you better than this 117-key layout.

The keys use scissor switches, the laptop-style mechanism, so expect a shallow, quiet press. ProtoArc gives no key travel figure and no weight.

Small contradictions

DetailOne place saysAnother says
Backlight levels34
Minimum macOS10.1210.15
Tilt3 angle settingsa single 4.07 degree figure
Multi-deviceconnects to three "simultaneously"switches between three

None of these is serious. The last one is worth understanding: like nearly every multi-device keyboard, it stores three pairings and types into one at a time.

FAQ

How long does the ProtoArc EK01 Plus battery last?

ProtoArc quotes up to 200 days of standby. It does not publish typing hours, and the backlight will shorten whatever that figure is.

Can the two halves be separated?

No. It is a one-piece keyboard with a fixed split.

Does it work with Mac?

Yes. The listing gives the minimum macOS version as 10.12 in one place and 10.15 in another.

Did you test it?

No. This review is based on ProtoArc's published listing.

Verdict

The EK01 Plus is a low-risk way to try a split keyboard: $80, a two-year warranty and 30 days to send it back. Measure your desk first, and do not plan around 200 days between charges if you keep the backlight on.
